Hello and welcome back to the Para Sport Update, produced in collaboration with the Canadian Paralympic Committee. I’m Greg Westlake.
Fresh off the Canadian Men’s Wheelchair Basketball team clinching their spot for the Paris Paralympic Games, the attention turns to the Women’s squad, who took to the courts in Osaka, Japan, looking to secure their spot on the big stage.
Set in a group with Spain, France, and Japan at the IWBF Repechage Tournament, the Canadians ran the table in group B, going 3-0, setting Canada up for a match with Algeria in the Playoffs. Canada cruised to a win over the Algerians, stamping their ticket to the 2024 Paralympic Games!
Staying in “Land of the Rising Sun”, Rob Shaw took to the tennis courts at the Japan Open in Kobe. Paired with Heath Davidson, the Canadian Wheelchair Tennis Star didn’t drop a set on the way to winning the doubles title at the Open.
From the courts to Canada’s capital, a deal has been struck in Ottawa, securing $35 million for Canada’s athletes carding funding over the next 5 years.
The deal, through Athletes Can, the Federal Government, and the athlete's councils of the Canadian Paralympic Committee and Canadian Olympic Committee, will help boost the Athletes Assistance Program’s funding through Sport Canada starting in the 2024-2025 Season.
That's our time for this edition of the Para Sport Update, presented by AMI-audio. Check back next week for more news from the world of adaptive sports.
